Johnny Mavuso (the story behind Johnny Andile Mavuso)

We are all born with something very precious that was given to us by our parents, however, we don't use it instead it is used by other people. The thing I'm talking about is one's name. In the following short story I am going to discuss who exactly is Johnny Mavuso and how did he come to be.

Born Andile 'Christopher' Johnny Mavuso is the last-born son of Mbangowezizwe Johann Mavuso and Thulisile Alice Zwane "Nyandeni". Johnny  Mavuso was born in the year 1992 March 26 at Piet Retief Hospital in Piet Retief, the small city that is situated on the feet of Mpumalanga Province approximately 60 km from the boundary of KwaZulu Natal Province and 100 km away from Pongola. Johnny Mavuso grew up living with his mother and father who had less than a decade of cohabitation before he was born.

His father Johann Mavuso was a hulk of a man who initially worked as a police officer for donkeys years and travelled around South Africa. In the late seventies and eighties, he was awarded the best officer award due to his ultra-fast actions and aero-dynamics when duty called. After his resignation as an Officer, he worked as a Coroner. He met Johnny's mother Thulisile Alice and decided to spend his life-time with her. Four years after the birth of Johnny, the whole family moved to Vryheid in the year 1996.

In the year 1999, Johnny Mavuso experienced his first moment in school. He was admitted in Vryheid Junior Primary School which is situated in the Vryheid CBD. Johnny Mavuso had friends and met new people in his
surroundings. As a young boy, he displayed a healthy and energetic lifestyle. He was able to speak and understand three languages (IsiZulu, English and Afrikaans) with fluency. His first class teacher was Mrs Hennen and his first school friends were Andile Dlamini and Ayanda Sangweni. In his homestead, he lived with white people together with his father and mother. His first white friend was John Swannepoel followed by Christopher Tout whose mother was Karren. Christopher Tout was the reason behind the amendment of Johnny's middle name which was "Christopher" due to the avoidance of confusion. Johnny was then named after his grandfather from his maternal side John Swonko Nyandeni and the streak of names starting with "J" from his paternal side.

The sudden death of Johnny's father in the year 2000 July 28 changed the whole plot since he was the breadwinner. Johnny and his mother Thulisile had to move from the urban area of Vryheid to the rural village called Emanyandeni which is situated approximately 40 km from Pongola. Johnny had to de-register from Vryheid Junior Primary School and register in Siyeza L.P. School which is a public 'black' school situated in Belgrade a neighbouring village 7 km away from Emanyandeni. Johnny had to live with his maternal abusive family. This is the point of time where he learnt survival skills and looked at life in another perspective. In his mother's absence for the whole year, Johnny had to fetch woods, water and do tasks that were supposed to be done by elders at that time. He was destitute and in need of care and love as a child who was still dependant to his parent. Johnny moved from everything to nothing.

In the year 2001, Johnny's mother returned from Johannesburg for job seeking. Upon her return, she met a man by the name of Dumisani Oscar Motha and they had a relationship. Technically, Dumisani Oscar Motha became Johnny's stepfather. Johnny was then fetched by his mother from his abusive maternal family and lived with his mother and stepfather in Motha's homestead which is situated in Belgrade section C. Johnny's stepfather was a polite and true man who loved his family. That was the point of time where Johnny found the feeling of having a family. Again, Johnny met new people and a new standard of living, therefore, he lived and viewed life in a different perspective. Belgrade is a semi-rural area with some developments and facilities taken into consideration.

Johnny Mavuso continued with his education and progressed with flying colours, that resulted in him not doing grade 6 because he got promoted from grade 5 to grade 7 in Lalela H.P. School due to his outstanding performance. In the year 2006, Johnny's stepfather passed away and he was left with only his mother. Johnny's mother inherited the Motha homestead. The death of his stepfather didn't jeopardize anything. Johnny's mother started a business that was aimed in serving people with pottery set and later on expanded into food beverages. Life was not demanding. Johnny continued with his secondary education in Langa High School and things were normal.

Johnny Mavuso was a very famous young man in Belgrade and he knew most people. That resulted in his mother being much known to children as well. Johnny's mother Thulisile, was a short, fit and light in complexion beautiful lady who was having a high social status. She was known for her ability to socialize and the way she could lose her temper and get aggressive. She was a fearless woman who never backed off from a challenge. She was a woman of her word and very smart and intelligent. When it came to publicity and marketing she was very persuasive and interactive. She passed away tragically after a homicidal attack in the year 2009 July 26. Johnny survived the attack, however, he was left with a lifetime scar knowing that he lost his beloved mother in front of his eyes and the fact that he was an orphan.

After Johnny's recovery in hospital in 2009, he was taken to Pietermaritzburg in a place of safety called Pata Place of Safety. Pietermaritzburg is situated in the mid-lands of KwaZulu Natal approximately 90 km from Durban along the N3 route to Johannesburg. It is the capital city of KwaZulu Natal. Johnny Mavuso had to live in a far different perspective of life because he had to move again from the semi-rural area to a total urban area and meet new people of different behaviour and backgrounds. Johnny lived in Pata Place of Safety as his new home and in September 2009, he was admitted at KwaPata Secondary School where he displayed an outstanding performance of academic abilities. While still living in Pata Place of  Safety, Johnny was adopted by Mr Mlungisi Qhubekani Israel Magwanyana, who is a state advocate in the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). In 2010, he moved to Greenfields Place of Safety which is situated in Cool Air, Dalton approximately 20 km from Pietermaritzburg CBD. He finally matriculated at KwaPata Secondary School and he was the first child to matriculate whilst living in Greenfields Place of Safety. In 2011, Johnny enrolled and became a freshman in the University of Zululand and furthered his studies in pursuit of a Bachelor of Information Science Degree.

Johnny Mavuso got to experience life outside Greenfield Place of Safety. College life was very fascinating and new to him. He had to be independent and grow up as he accumulated skills and unique social approaches. In 2011 June 16, Johnny Mavuso got a life-time honour by the MEC of Social Development in KwaZulu Natal, Dr M.B. Radebe. Johnny was honoured with a bursary and Greenfields Place of Safety got renovated for R 15 Million and it was renamed after him i.e. Greenfields Place of Safety changed to Johnny Mavuso Place of Safety.

Since then, Johnny Mavuso is living with his foster parents (Magwanyana) in Pietermaritzburg and he has two step brothers and sisters.
